Here's a handy guide to getting around Hobart quick and easy.
While Hobart is smaller than most of Australia’s major cities, it still has plenty of transport options for visitors including buses, driving, and walking. This practical information on getting around Hobart will make moving around the city very simple.
To use the public bus network in Hobart, recommend purchasing a Metro Greencard. It costs $25 (which includes a $5 deposit and $20 of credit) and is available from the Metro Shop or the Mall Newsagency on Elizabeth Street. Once purchased, a 20% discount to bus fares and a daily cap of $9.40 on weekdays or $4.70 on weekends will be automatically applied when travelling.
For trips within the city, fares should be between $2.70 - $4.70 per ride. To start a ride, tap the card on the driver’s ticket machine when boarding and make the driver aware of the planned destination. Note single tickets can also be purchased on board.
Buses
Most buses in the Metro network will depart from Elizabeth Street (between Macquarie and Collins Streets) or Franklin Square. Some useful routes are the 446 bus to South Hobart to visit the Cascade Brewery and Female Factory, or the X20 express bus to MONA.
The Red Decker hop-on, hop-off bus is another great way to see Hobart’s city attractions. A 24 hour City Loop ticket is $35 or get a 48 hour City Loop ticket for $40, both of which include Salamanca Place, Battery Point, Wrest Point, Cascade Brewery, Female Factory, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, and the Royal Botanical Gardens. The City Loop + Mt Wellington ticket is $65 and allows a visit to the summit of Hobart’s majestic mountain on a separate two hour tour.
Ferries
If planning on seeing the wild and wacky art at MONA, there is a private ferry that will take visitors from Brooke Street Pier on Hobart’s waterfront to the art museum in Claremont. The journey takes 25 minutes and costs $22 return for a standard ticket.
The Hobart Airporter shuttle bus is an easy way to get to Hobart Airport from the city. Tickets are $20 one way or $35 return for adults. The bus collects passengers from most hotels in Hobart, and the timetable meets all flights arriving and departing from Hobart Airport.
In Australia, airlines, trains, buses and ferries have accessible options for people using a wheelchair or mobility device. Hobart Airport provides special assistance for people with disabilities and can help with baggage, getting around the airport, and getting on and off the plane.
